La séptima ronda de negociaciones entre Estados Unidos y Rusia para reducir sus arsenales nucleares comenzó hoy en Ginebra.
Así lo confirmaron las dos misiones que, sin embargo, no precisaron el tiempo que van a durar las discusiones.
Ambos países quieren lograr un acuerdo antes del próximo diciembre, cuando expira el tratado de desarme estratégico vigente, el START, que data de 1991.
En julio pasado, los presidentes estadounidense, Barack Obama, y ruso, Dmitri Medvédev, acordaron que el nuevo tratado fijaría entre 1.500 y 1.675 el nivel máximo de ojivas y de 500 a 1.000 el de portadores que podrá tener cada país.
Pero, según medios rusos, la disensión actual radica precisamente en el número de portadores, ya que EEUU no está dispuesto a reducirlos hasta los 500, como desea Rusia.
El pasado 17 de septiembre, Obama confirmó que su país renunciaba a su polémico escudo antimisiles en Europa del Este, aunque posteriormente, su secretaria de Estado, Hillary Clinton, confirmó el deseo de EEUU de desarrollar más adelante dicho escudo, pero en estrecha colaboración con Rusia y la OTAN.
