El último duque de Cambridge también se enamoró y se casó con una plebeya, si bien la boda de aquél, en 1847, jamás fue reconocida por la Familia Real y su esposa fue condenada al ostracismo.
Aquél noble con menos suerte que el hijo del príncipe Carlos y Diana de Gales fue el príncipe Jorge, conocido como el segundo duque de Cambridge, nacido en 1819 y nieto de Jorge III.
El príncipe Jorge jamás aceptó una boda acordada y consideró que esos enlaces reales estaban "condenados al fracaso".
Jorge se enamoró perdidamente de la actriz Sarah Louisa Fairbrother, una mujer de gran belleza.
El príncipe y Sarah se casaron en 1847 cuando ella ya había sido madre de dos de sus hijos y estaba embarazada de un tercero.
Pese a todo, el príncipe Jorge jamás buscó la aprobación real y su boda nunca fue reconocida, recuerdan hoy los historiadores.
A Sarah Fairbrother jamás se le concedió el título de duquesa de Cambridge y era conocida simplemente como la señora FitzGeorge.
A diferencia de entonces, hoy el príncipe Guillermo ha recibido de su abuela, la reina Isabel II, el título de duque de Cambridge sin que la Familia Real le haya cuestionado en ningún momento el linaje de su prometida, Kate Middleton, una joven de clase media.
Así, Kate Middleton saldrá hoy de la Abadía de Westminster, una vez casada con Guillermo, como Su Alteza Real Duquesa de Cambridge.
Además del ducado, la soberana británica ha decidido conceder a su nieto los títulos de conde de Strathearn y barón de Carrickfergus, con lo que Kate Middleton también llevará los títulos de condesa de Strathearn y baronesa de Carrickfergus.
El título de conde de Strathearn relaciona a Guillermo con Escocia, donde conoció y se enamoró de Kate Middleton cuando ambos estudiaban en la Universidad de St.Andrews.
Además, al llevar el título de barón de Carrickfergus, el príncipe Guillermo estará vinculado con Irlanda del Norte, puesto que Carrickfergus es la ciudad más antigua del condado de Antrim.
