Reino Unido salió de la recesión en el cuarto trimestre de 2009 pero con un crecimiento muy inferior al esperado, según datos oficiales publicados el martes que indican que el endurecimiento de las políticas monetarias queda todavía lejos.
El Gobierno laborista esperaba una fuerte recuperación económica para dar la vuelta a unas encuestas que le muestran muy por debajo de los conservadores de cara a las elecciones que se celebrarán en 100 días, pero las últimas cifras plantean dudas sobre la salud del crecimiento británico.
La Oficina de Estadísticas Nacionales dijo que el Producto Interior Bruto (PIB) creció un 0,1 por ciento intertrimestral entre octubre y diciembre, muy por debajo de la previsión de los analistas de un crecimiento del 0,4 por ciento tras una recesión de 18 meses que ha recortado el PIB en un 6 por ciento.
"Las cifras del cuarto trimestre son un fuerte golpe a las esperanzas de que la economía británica había salido de forma convincente de la recesión", dijo Jonathan Loynes, economista de Capital Economics.
La libra caía y el precio de los futuros sobre bonos públicos británicos subía después de las cifras, que también mostraron un descenso del PIB del 3,2 por ciento respecto al cuarto trimestre de 2008, y experimentó un descenso récord del 4,8 por ciento en el conjunto de 2009.
