La Casa Blanca pidió hoy al Gobierno del presidente Robert Mugabe y sus "matones" que paren la violencia en Zimbabue, la cual motivó que su principal rival electoral, Morgan Tsvangirai, abandonara en esta jornada la campaña.
"El Gobierno de Zimbabue y sus matones deben detener la violencia ahora mismo", dijo Carlton Carroll, un portavoz presidencial, en un comunicado.
"Todas las partes deberían poder participar en una elección legítima y no estar sujetas a la intimidación y las acciones ilegales del gobierno, las milicias armadas y los así llamados veteranos de guerra", afirmó Carroll.
El pasado jueves, la secretaria de Estado de EEUU, Condoleezza Rice, instó al Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU a que presione al Gobierno de Zimbabue para que la segunda ronda de las elecciones presidenciales fueran "libres y justas".
"No veo que el presidente Mugabe haya hecho nada que sea de ayuda al pueblo de Zimbabue, así que tal vez es hora de aplicar presiones internacionales", afirmó entonces Rice.
Tsvangirai anunció hoy que no se presentará a las elecciones previstas para el 27 de junio, pese a haber ganado la primera ronda, en la que, según las autoridades electorales, no logró una mayoría suficiente para saldar la contienda.
El líder del Movimiento para el Cambio Democrático (MCD) denunció que más de 10.000 personas han resultado heridas por la violencia desatada por Mugabe y 20.000 casas han sido destruidas.
Según un informe de la organización de defensa de los derechos humanos Human Rights Watch, más de medio centenar de seguidores del MDC han sido asesinados por grupos vinculados al Gobierno.
