El presidente de EEUU, Barack Obama ha autorizado el envío de aviones no tripulados a Libia, según anunció hoy el secretario de Defensa, Robert Gates, que subrayó que Estados Unidos no participará con militares en el terreno.
La primera misión estaba prevista para este jueves pero se ha retrasado debido a las malas condiciones meteorológicas, dijo hoy Gates en una rueda de prensa junto con el subjefe del Estado Mayor Conjunto, el general James Cartwright.
Cartwright indicó que los aviones no tripulados "Predator" están especialmente armados para realizar ataques con mayor precisión contra tropas del dictador libio Muamar el Gadafi y permite reducir "al mínimo" los daños colaterales en zonas urbanas.
Gates enfatizó que el presidente Obama "no ha cambiado de posición" y mantiene su postura inicial de no enviar tropas a Libia.
El secretario de Defensa subrayó que de todos los aliados EEUU es el país con más tropas en Afganistán, Irak y recientemente en Japón, para ayudar tras el terremoto y posterior tsunami que asoló el país, y desde el principio ha mantenido claro los límites de su papel en la misión libia.
Gates señaló que el cambio de régimen "fue siempre un objetivo político complicado" y apeló al papel de los libios en el proceso para tener éxito.
"Podemos ofrecer alguna cobertura desde el aire pero el trabajo real tendrá que venir de los propios libios". El cambio, dijo, "funciona mejor cuando se hace desde el interior", aunque reconoció que "eso toma tiempo".
"Toda la comunidad internacional se ha unido para decir que Gadafi debe irse", incluida la Liga Árabe, recordó.
En este sentido, consideró que los embargos y las sanciones internacionales impuestas contra Gadafi y miembros de su familia "tendrán consecuencias" sobre el régimen.
