El enviado especial de Estados Unidos para Oriente Medio, George Mitchell, llegó hoy a Siria para reunirse con el presidente, Bachar al Asad, en lo que se considera un nuevo impulso a las negociaciones para alcanzar la paz en la región.
Según informó la agencia de noticias siria, Sana, el senador fue recibido por el presidente árabe en el palacio presidencial.
Ayer, el enviado de la Casa Blanca estuvo en el Líbano donde se reunió con el presidente, Michel Suleimán, el portavoz parlamentario Nabih Berri, el primer ministro, Saad Hariri, y el ministro de Asuntos Exteriores Al el Chami.
Con ellos discutió la situación "de los esfuerzos para alcanzar la paz en Oriente Medio y conoció el punto de vista del Líbano a este respecto", informó en un comunicado enviado hoy la embajada estadounidense en Beirut.
Según este comunicado, "el senador aseguró el compromiso del presidente Obama y de la secretaria de Estado, Hillary Clinton, con una paz global en Oriente Medio que incluya la paz entre Israel y los palestinos, y con Siria, y con el Líbano, así como la normalización de las relaciones con los estados árabes".
"Reiteró que el Líbano jugará un papel clave en los esfuerzos a largo plazo para construir una paz duradera y global" y que no hay solución para la región que no incluya al Líbano, según la nota.
"Además, como enviado de EEUU, Mitchell confirmó al primer ministro Saad Hariri que su país no apoyará la naturalización forzosa de los palestinos que habitan en el Líbano", añadió la nota.
