La directiva europea de reciclaje fijó una tasa para el vidrio en España del 60% en 2008, y a 31 de diciembre del año pasado el 60,3% del vidrio consumido se había reciclado. "Hemos cumplido el objetivo", señaló ayer el director general de Ecovidrio, Javier Puig de la Bellacasa. En total se reciclaron más de 972.600 toneladas de envases de vidrio, con una media de 15,5 kilogramos por habitante.
Los ciudadanos que más envases depositaron en los contenedores verdes fueron los navarros, con 24,8 kilos por habitante de media, seguidos de vascos (24,4), baleares (22), catalanes y riojanos (21,5 kilos cada uno). Por el contrario, Andalucía es la comunidad que menos recicla por habitante (exceptuando las ciudades autónomas), con 9,3 kilos; seguida de Extremadura (9,5), Castilla-La Mancha (10), Asturias (12,2) y Canarias (12,5).
Estos envases se reciclan al 100%, y el principal destino del vidrio recuperado es la fabricación de nuevos envases "que tienen las mismas características de calidad" que los originales, apuntó el director de Ecovidrio. Además, el vidrio reciclado se emplea en encimeras de cocina, azulejos o pintura reflectante.
