El espacio aéreo del noroeste de España ha quedado cerrado hasta, al menos,las 00.8 GMT de mañana a causa de la extensión de la nube de ceniza procedente de un volcán islandés, según ha confirmado la Agencia Europea para la Seguridad en la Navegación Aérea (Eurocontrol).
Según los últimos datos que ha facilitado en su página web, actualizados a las 17.45 GMT, el tráfico aéreo ha quedado suspendido en ese tramo del espacio aéreo español.
Esta tarde, Aena decidió el cierre de siete aeropuertos españoles por razones de seguridad, aunque afirmó que permanece abierto todo el espacio aéreo de la Península, ya que están permitidos los sobrevuelos por encima de los 22.000 pies de altura.
Los aeropuertos afectados son los de Asturias, Santander, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Vitoria, Pamplona y Logroño, y su servicio permanecerá suspendido desde las 20.00 horas de hoy hasta las 10.00 horas local de mañana domingo, según Aena.
Eurocontrol destacó que el tráfico aéreo está completamente restringido en los siguientes países: Bélgica, Estonia, Finlandia, el Reino Unido, Holanda, Irlanda, Dinamarca, Eslovaquia, Polonia, Croacia, Hungría, Suecia, Eslovenia, la República Checa, Rumanía, Suiza, Serbia y Bulgaria.
El espacio aéreo de Alemania, Francia, Italia y Austria permanece parcialmente cerrado, apuntó.
Cerca de 17.000 vuelos han sido cancelados hoy en Europa, ya que sólo han podido operar unos 5.000 de los 22.000 vuelos previstos, mientras que no ha sido posible el despegue y aterrizaje de aeronaves civiles en la mayor parte del norte y centro del continente, según detalló la agencia.
