El ex gobernador del Banco de España y dirigente del Fondo Monetario Internacional Jaime Caruana ha sido nombrado director general del Banco Internacional de Pagos (BIS, por sus siglas en inglés).
Este banco radicado en Suiza, que actúa como foro para los bancos centrales de todo el mundo, dijo que Caruana comenzaría su mandato de cinco años el 1 de abril de 2009.
Caruana sustituye a Malcolm Knight, que abandonó su cargo en julio.
El presidente del BIS, Jean-Pierre Roth, dijo que Caruana, actualmente director del departamento de mercados monetarios y de capital del FMI, es muy apreciado dentro de la comunidad financiera internacional.
"El consejo está encantado de haber asegurado a una persona del calibre de Caruana y con experiencia internacional para ser el próximo director general del BIS ", dijo Roth en un comunicado.
Caruana fue gobernador del Banco de España seis años hasta 2006.
