Un panel de expertos que asesora a laOrganización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) acerca de las pandemiasse reunirá el martes para decidir si declara el fin del brotede gripe H1N1.
La OMS dijo en un comunicado el lunes que su comité deemergencia iniciará una teleconferencia a las 1200 GMT delmartes y que los resultados serán publicados más tarde en supágina de internet.
Previamente este mes, una portavoz de la agencia deNaciones Unidas dijo que el panel iba a considerar tres grandesopciones.
Por un lado, podría concluir que la pandemia sigue vigentey mantener la actual fase 6, la máxima de la escala. Perotambién podría declarar que la enfermedad atraviesa una etapaposterior a la de máxima actividad o que finalmente haterminado.
Las guías de la OMS acerca de si una enfermedad constituyeuna pandemia determinan el modo en que sus 193 estados miembrosmanejan un brote, incluyendo el almacenamiento de vacunas yantivirales.
La agencia fue acusada de exagerar el peligro del virusH1N1, que fue declarado una pandemia total en junio del 2009, ados meses de su surgimiento en América del Norte.
Los síntomas que sufrieron las personas infectadas fueronmucho más leves que en las últimas pandemias. Pero los expertosde la OMS aseguran que el brote aún es severo y su fáciltransmisión genera el riesgo de que el virus mute en una formamás letal.
La agencia dice que los test de laboratorio confirmaron másde 18.000 muertes por H1N1, también conocido como gripeporcina, pero que la cifra real es mucho mayor.
El virus actualmente es más activo en partes del Caribe yel sudeste asiático, con alguna actividad en ciertas zonas deChile.
El comité de emergencia esperó hasta el comienzo delinvierno en el hemisferio sur antes de conducir su revisión.
