El colombiano Radamel Falcao, delantero del Atlético de Madrid, retoma la Liga Europa con un nuevo reto personal, el asalto al liderato de la tabla de máximos goleadores del torneo, en el que está a dos tantos del holandés Klaas Jan Huntelaar, del Schalke 04 y ya eliminado de la competición.
Falcao suma ocho dianas en doce encuentros, es el mejor goleador del curso en la Liga Europa de los jugadores que afrontan desde mañana las semifinales y tiene un nuevo récord al alcance si termina al frente de la clasificación de anotadores, ya que nadie ha repetido como máximo goleador en dos ediciones seguidas del torneo.
El atacante colombiano necesita al menos tres tantos más para conseguirlo, siempre con el permiso de otros goleadores que siguen en competición, como su compañero Adrián López y Fernando Llorente (Athletic Club), los dos con seis, e Iker Muniain, también del equipo bilbaíno, o Ricki Van Wiolfswinkel (Sporting), con cinco.
En sus dos participaciones en el torneo, Falcao ha marcado ya 25 dianas. La pasada campaña firmó diecisiete en las filas del Oporto y estableció la mejor marca de goles en una edición de la Copa de la UEFA o Liga Europa, al batir el récord del alemán Jurgen Klinsmann, con quince tantos para el Bayern Múnich en la temporada 1995-96.
El delantero del Atlético, además, es el cuarto futbolista con más goles de la historia de esta competición, igualado con el italiano Alessandro Altobelli, que también batió la portería rival en 25 ocasiones entre el Inter y el Juventus; a dos del georgiano Shota Arveladze, con 27; a cuatro del alemán Dieter Muller, con 29, y a quince del sueco Henrik Larsson, con 40.
