El ciclista Laurent Fignon, ganador del Tour de Francia en 1983 y 1984, falleció hoy a causa de un cáncer, reveló el canal público "France 2", donde ejercía de comentarista.
Fignon, nacido en París hace 50 años, reveló que padecía un cáncer avanzado en las vías digestivas, en un libro publicado en 2009, titulado "Nous étions jeunes et insouciants".
El ciclista conquistó el Tour de Francia dos años consecutivos con el equipo Renault, en 1983 y 1984, y terminó segundo en la edición de 1989, por detrás del estadounidense Greg Lemond, en una edición que quedó en la historia por decidirse con la diferencia más pequeña jamás registrada, 8 segundos.
El corredor, apodado "El Profesor", fue profesional de 1982 a 1993, con más de 80 victorias en su palmarés entre las que destacan, además de los dos Tours, un Giro de Italia (1989) y clásicas de renombre como la Milán-San Remo.
Fignon, que en ese mismo libro reconoció haber consumido anfetaminas y de cortisona durante su carrera, trabajaba en "France 2" como comentarista del Tour de Francia.
