El tenista número uno del mundo, Roger Federer, comenzó el martes a defender su título del Abierto de Madrid con una victoria 6-2 y 7-6 ante el alemán Benjamin Becker, en un duelo de segunda ronda.
Por otro lado, el argentino Eduardo Schwank venció al francés Paul-Henri Mathieu por 6-3 y 6-3, mientras que su compatriota Juan Ignacio Chela derrotó al uruguayo Pablo Cuevas por 2-0 y abandonó.
También avanzó a la segunda ronda el brasileño Thomaz Bellucci, al imponerse al español Pere Riba por 7-6 (7-5) y 6-1.
Con el techo abierto de la pista Manolo Santana de la Caja Mágica de Madrid, el suizo apenas sudó ante el número 46 del mundo, en un día nublado en la capital española.
Becker salvó dos puntos de partido cuando estaba 6-5 abajo en el segundo set y otro más en el 'tie-break', pero envió un revés demasiado largo y le entregó la victoria a Federer.
Federer, de 28 años, ha llegado a la final de este torneo en tres de los últimos cuatro años, pero no ha ganado un título desde que levantó su Grand Slam número 16 en enero en el Abierto de Australia.
La temporada del suizo en tierra batida no ha sido buena de cara al Roland Garros de este mes, donde defenderá su título.
Federer fue eliminado en la segunda ronda del Abierto de Roma por el letón Ernests Gulbis y cayó la semana pasada en semifinales de Estoril ante el español Albert Montañés.
El también español Fernando Verdasco, sexto cabeza de serie, se enfrentaba más tarde al croata Ivo Karlovic, mientras que el argentino David Nalbandian, ganador del torneo en 2007, lo haría ante el checo Tomas Berdych.
