Un transbordador que hacía el recorrido entre Estonia y Finlandia con 850 pasajeros a bordo ha quedado atrapado en el hielo del mar Báltico, dijeron el viernes las autoridades marítimas.
Esa Hurskainen, supervisor del Centro de Tráfico de Navíos del golfo de Finlandia, dijo que la embarcación, el Nordlandia, se quedó atorada cuando estaba saliendo de Helsinki.
"Un rompehielos conoce la situación, pero está ocupado con otros barcos, así que no podemos estimar cuánto tiempo tendrán que esperar", dijo a Reuters. Añadió que el barco no estaba en peligro.
Un responsable de costas indicó que la embarcación, operada por Eckero Line, estaba varada a unos 15 kilómetros al sur de Helsinki en su camino a la capital estonia, Tallín.
Una portavoz de Eckero Line señaló que los pasajeros estaban tranquilos.
"Hablamos con la tripulación hace unos minutos y nos dijeron que acababan de servir el almuerzo", dijo la portavoz, Ida Toikka-Everi.
Atso Uusiaho, de Arctia Shipping, que opera los rompehielos en el Báltico, dijo que había entre 15 y 20 barcos que necesitaban ayuda por el hielo, pero que el Nordlandia era el único barco de pasajeros.
La región se ha visto afectada por un tiempo inusualmente frío durante semanas, con temperaturas que han caído por debajo de los 20 grados bajo cero.
