El director del departamento de Asuntos Monetarios y Mercados de Capitales del Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI), Jaime Caruana, afirmó hoy que economías emergentes como la latinoamericana contribuirán a que la economía global supere la actual crisis financiera, "que aún no ha terminado".
"Estas economías ya no son parte del problema como en otras ocasiones, sino parte de la solución, gracias al dinamismo de su crecimiento", aseguró el ex gobernador del Banco de España durante unas jornadas sobre infraestructuras en Latinoamérica organizadas por Montoro Asociados.
Aunque reconoció que esta zona no ha sido "inmune" a las turbulencias financieras, Caruana insistió en que han demostrado mayor solidez y resistencia que otras para seguir creciendo.
No obstante, advirtió de que Latinoamérica no puede bajar la guardia y debe seguir profundizando en las reformas económicas que están llevando a cabo porque las turbulencias no han terminado y los riesgos a la baja en el crecimiento han aumentado.
En este sentido, recordó que la zona aún debe afrontar riesgos internos y externos que en los últimos meses se han acentuado "hacia el lado negativo".
Entre estos riesgos destacó que, según las últimas previsiones del FMI, la recesión de la economía estadounidense provocará caídas de hasta dos puntos sobre el Producto Interior Bruto (PIB) previsto para Latinoamérica en 2008, que se situaba entorno al 4,5 por ciento.
Asimismo, aunque la zona no tiene exposición directa a las hipotecas de alto riesgo, Caruana consideró que sus entidades financieras sí puede verse afectadas por la menor liquidez y por el incremento de la aversión al riesgo.
