El Gobierno tiene previsto aprobar hoy, en su reunión de Consejo de Ministros, el envío temporal de un batallón, integrado por 450 soldados, a Afganistán para reforzar el proceso electoral en ese país, han confirmado a Efe fuentes del Ministerio de Defensa.
El Consejo de Ministros dará luz verde a esta iniciativa, presentada por los ministerios de Asuntos Exteriores y Defensa.
Será el titular de Exteriores, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, quien la lleve a la reunión del Gabinete en la Moncloa, ya que Carme Chacón se encuentra en Bruselas en una reunión de ministros de Defensa de la OTAN.
El denominado batallón electoral se desplazará a Afganistán a principios de julio, permanecerá allí entre tres y cuatro meses y se ubicará en la zona de responsabilidad española de la provincia de Badghis (oeste).
Tras el visto bueno del Gobierno, el envío tiene que ser autorizado por el Parlamento, para lo que la ministra de Defensa deberá solicitar su comparecencia y recibir posteriormente la aprobación definitiva del Ejecutivo.
Los 450 militares enviados a Afganistán se sumarán a los 778 que actualmente integran la misión española encuadrada en la operación ISAF de Naciones Unidas.
De esta forma, la misión en Afganistán, que es en la que más soldados han perdido la vida (87), se convertirá también en la más numerosa, seguida de Líbano (1.100).
España ya aportó en 2004 y 2005 contingentes similares para garantizar las elecciones en Afganistán.
