El Gobierno del presidente de EEUU, Barack Obama, estudia cambiar el proceso de las comisiones militares de Guantánamo, lo cual permitiría que detenidos que enfrentan la pena de muerte se declaren culpables sin necesidad de un juicio, informó el diario The New York Times.
En un artículo en su sitio de Internet, el diario dijo que la disposición posibilitaría que los fiscales militares no difundan detalles de las técnicas de interrogatorio aplicadas durante el Gobierno del presidente George W. Bush y muchas de ellas consideradas como tortura.
El cambio también permitiría que cinco detenidos acusados de participar en los ataques del 11 de septiembre de 2001 cumplan su deseo de manifestarse culpables sin declararse mártires, indicó la publicación.
The New York Times manifestó que la disposición está incluida en un proyecto de ley que sería presentado al Congreso y que no se ha dado a conocer de forma pública.
Añadió que ha circulado entre algunos funcionarios bajo restricciones que exigen que se mantenga en secreto y ha sido presentada al secretario de Defensa, Robert Gates.
El diario indicó que la propuesta aliviaría la que se considera una difícil tarea del Gobierno al enjuiciar a individuos que se han declarado terroristas, pero cuyos casos presentan un desafío jurídico.
Gran parte de las pruebas que existen contra los acusados por el 11-S habría sido obtenida en confesiones hechas durante interrogatorios en prisiones secretas de la Agencia Central de Inteligencia (CIA), señaló.
Añadió que esas confesiones serían puestas en duda, lo que dificultaría los procesos y plantearía nuevas presiones políticas relativas al tratamiento dado a los detenidos, asegura The New York Times.
