El Gobierno iraquí confirmó este martes la detención del líder de Al Qaeda en Irak, Abu Omar al Bagdadi, cinco días después de que su arresto fuera adelantado por un portavoz militar.
Hasta hoy, el Ejecutivo no había confirmado ni desmentido en los canales oficiales que el detenido fuera el dirigente del grupo Estado Islámico de Irak, vinculado a Al Qaeda, mientras que el Ejército de EEUU todavía no se ha pronunciado al respecto.
Un comunicado del Gobierno dado a conocer hoy señala que Abu Omar al Bagdadi, a quien califica como "la cabeza del mal" y el líder de la organización Al Qaeda en Irak, "ha caído en manos de los heroicos servicios de seguridad".
Al Bagdadi tiene el título de "amir" (príncipe) del Estado Islámico de Irak, la organización de la que forman parte ocho grupos insurgentes iraquíes y que está directamente vinculada con la organización terrorista internacional dirigida por Osama bin Laden.
Abu Omar al Bagdadi sucedió al frente de Al Qaeda en Irak al jordano Abu Musab al Zarqaui, tras la muerte de este en un bombardeo aéreo estadounidense el 8 de junio de 2006, en una aldea situada al noreste de Bagdad.
