El alemán Tommy Haas se adjudicó el torneo de tenis en Halle (Alemania) al derrotar al serbio Novak Djokovic por 6-3, 6-7(4) y 6-1 tras casi dos horas y cuarto de partido.
El serbio se había impuesto al germano en los dos enfrentamientos previos, en 2006 en Roland Garros y esta temporada en el Masters 1000 de Indian Wells, con lo que Haas ha roto la tendencia y, además, en casa.
Haas ha conseguido el primer título de la temporada y el duodécimo de su carrera, ante un Djokovic que aspiraba al tercer triunfo de la campaña, tras los de Dubai y Belgrado.
Haas, de 31 años, comenzó jugando un gran tenis, con buenos servicios que facilitaban el error en los restos de Djokovic. Mientras buscaba acoplarse al juego del rival y a la pista, el alemán ganó el primer set.
La igualdad continuó en la segunda manga, que se adjudicó Djokovic en el desempate, que dominó desde el principio.
En el tercer y definitivo set, Haas consiguió ponerse 3-0, tras romper el servicio a Djokovic. Cada punto fue jugado al límite y cada juego se resolvió después de varios empates. Aunque Djokovic consiguió el 3-1, después se borró de la pista y Haas consiguió fácil el resto de los puntos hasta el 6-1.
Haas fue profeta en su tierra después de que David Prinosil fuera el último alemán en ganar el torneo en el año 2000.
