Un cohete Ariane lanzó el jueves los dos observatorios científicos espaciales que ayudarán a comprender mejor la formación del universo, dijeron responsables espaciales.
El lanzamiento se produjo desde la plataforma de lanzamiento de la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA) en Kourou, en la Guayana francesa, en la costa noreste de Sudamérica, a las 13:12 GMT.
Catalogados por la ESA como 'dos de los más sofisticados vehículos astronómicos jamás construidos', los dos observatorios comenzarán un viaje de 60 días al punto Lagrange, un sistema orbital a 1,5 millones de kilómetros de la Tierra.
El telescopio espacial Herschel, que investigará cómo se forman las estrellas y galaxias y cómo evolucionan, fue puesto en órbita 26 minutos después del lanzamiento. Herschel cuenta con el mayor espejo visto hasta ahora en cualquier telescopio espacial en órbita.
Su diámetro de 3,5 metros es una vez y media mayor del tamaño del principal reflector del telescopio Hubble. Dos minutos más tarde, el observatorio Planck se separó del cohete. Planck está diseñado para proporcionar nuevas pistas sobre cómo llegó el universo a ser lo que es hoy y por qué.
Ambos satélites serán enfriados a casi cero grados para funcionar. El primer proveedor de ambos satélites es Thales Alenia Space, alianza entre la francesa Thales y la italiana Finmeccanica. El lanzamiento coincide con la reparación del satélite Hubble de la NASA, que pretende darle un nuevo impulso.
