Científicos de la Universidad de Navarra han identificado cinco genes implicados en la metástasis de tumores de mama a pulmón.
Éste es el principal hallazgo de un equipo formado por científicos del Centro de Investigación Médica Aplicada (CIMA) y la Clínica Universitaria de Navarra, según ha informado hoy en un comunicado este centro sanitario.
El doctor Alfonso Calvo, investigador del área de Oncología del CIMA, ha dirigido el trabajo con la colaboración de Ignacio Gil, oncólogo de la Clínica Universitaria, y de expertos de centros de cáncer de Estados Unidos. El estudio forma parte de la tesis doctoral de Raúl Catena y ha contado con la participación de Óscar González, ambos investigadores del CIMA.
Para esta investigación, publicada recientemente en la revista científica Oncogene, se empleó un modelo de ratón transgénico que presenta una mayor tendencia al desarrollo de metástasis.
En este sentido Calvo ha explicado que "el aumento del llamado Factor de Crecimiento Endotelial Vascular (VEGF) en sus glándulas mamarias ocasionó profundos cambios en la estructura tumoral, lo que permitió que las células malignas salieran del tumor e invadieran los pulmones".
Posteriormente, se analizó el patrón de genes responsable de esa migración tumoral al pulmón y se comparó con el que presentan mujeres con tumores de mama con afectación metastásica pulmonar y se comprobó que "cinco de esos genes eran comunes al modelo animal y a las pacientes con tumores de mama", según Calvo.
Según el estudio, "de esos cinco genes identificados, el gen de la Tenascina-C parece constituir una buena diana terapéutica para el tratamiento del cáncer de mama metastásico".
De hecho, según los expertos, "el bloqueo de la expresión de dicho gen en el modelo animal permitió una reducción significativa, tanto del crecimiento de los tumores como de la incidencia de metástasis pulmonares".
