Un equipo de investigadores portugueses del Instituto de Medicina Molecular (IMM) de la Universidad de Lisboa ha descubierto el mecanismo responsable de la propagación de células cancerígenas en los ovarios.
Esta investigación identifica un eje compuesto por células, interleucina-17 (proteína producida por células T) y pequeños macrófagos peritoneales (células de gran dimensión presentes en el tejido conjuntivo), que contribuye al desarrollo del tumor en los ovarios, según el comunicado difundido hoy por la Universidad.
El responsable del estudio, Bruno Silva-Santos, explica en la misma nota que esa cooperación celular es la que "promueve el crecimiento del cáncer de ovario en la cavidad peritoneal".
El descubrimiento de Silva-Santos y de las investigadoras Margarida Rei y Natacha Gonçalves-Sousa, permite ahora identificar "nuevos objetivos terapéuticos para una futura intervención".
El hallazgo representa un paso muy importante en la lucha contra este tipo de cáncer, uno de los más peligrosos. Está considerado el sexto más frecuente entre las mujeres en Portugal y la quinta causa de muerte por cáncer de la mujer en España.
En Portugal, el cáncer de ovario tiene una incidencia de 5,3 por cada 100.000 mujeres, con una mortalidad de 3,2 casos anualmente. En España, la tasa de mortalidad es de 4 por cada 100.000 mujeres, con 1.864 casos en el año 2013, según la Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica.
Este tipo de cáncer, que afecta mayoritariamente a mujeres en la menopausia, es conocido ya como el "enemigo silencioso", porque prácticamente no presenta síntomas durante la fase inicial y cerca del 75 % de los diagnósticos se dan en estados avanzados.
Es un tumor que se extiende a otras partes del cuerpo lo que, unido a su detección tardía, incrementa la tasa de mortalidad.
Con el descubrimiento del mecanismo que lo propaga, se podrá ahora trabajar, según Silva-Santos, para "neutralizar ese eje protumoral y reducir así su impacto".
