Una unidad del grupo ITT ha presentado una demanda contra Verizon Wireless y varios fabricantes de teléfonos móviles entre los que se encuentran Nokia, Motorola y LG Electronics, acusándoles de infringir una patente de sistemas de posicionamiento global (GPS, en sus siglas en inglés).
La demanda, que también nombra al proveedor de procesadores Qualcomm y al fabricante de teléfonos Kyocera como acusados, tenía fecha del 23 de febrero y se presentó en el Tribunal del Distrito de Wilmington, Delaware.
El denunciante afirma que Verizon Wireless, una empresa formada por Verizon Communications y Vodafone Group, viola su patente al vender teléfonos móviles adaptados para utilizar la tecnología GPS asistida, que puede localizar el paradero del usuario del teléfono.
ITT señala que la oferta de GPS, que funciona en los aparatos de Verizon Wireless de los fabricantes citados, infringe su patente número 5.635.450.
La empresa reclama al tribunal una orden permanente contra la violación de la patente, salvo por lo necesario para permitir servicios de emergencias del 911 (similar al 112 europeo), así como una indemnización por valor equivalente a "regalías razonables" e intereses.
Verizon Wireless, LG y Qualcomm no estaban inmediatamente disponibles para hacer comentarios. Kyocera declinó hacer comentarios al respecto.
Un portavoz de Nokia señaló que la empresa "se defenderá enérgicamente en este asunto y se asegurará de que sus derechos están completamente protegidos".
