El consejo del canal británico de televisión vía satélite British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) ha anunciado la dimisión de James Murdoch como presidente de la compañía, en la que continuará desempeñando labores de director no ejecutivo.
En una carta remitida al consejo de BSkyB, el delfín de Rupert Murdoch explica su decisión por su "determinación de que BSkyB no se vea afectada por cuestiones ajenas a la compañía" en referencia al escándalo de las escuchas ilegales en News Corporation.
"Entiendo que mi papel como presidente podría acabar convirtiéndose en una especie de pararrayos para BSkyB y creo que mi dimisión contribuirá a garantizar que no se confunden eventos en organizaciones distintas", explica Murdoch.
En el cargo le sustituirá Nicholas Ferguson, que desempeñaba el cargo de director de BSkyB desde junio de 2004, y previamente había ejercido como vicepresidente y director independiente no ejecutivo. Asimismo, Tom Mockridge, quien formaba parte del consejo de la compañía desde febrero de 2009, ha sido designado vicepresidente de la empresa, mientras Andrew Higginson reemplazará a Ferguson como director independiente no ejecutivo.
Tanto James Murdoch como su padre serán llamados a declarar próximamente ante la comisión presidida por el juez Brian Leveson, auspiciada por el Gobierno para investigar los estándares éticos y las prácticas ilegales de la prensa británica.
Además, en breve se publicará el informe de la comisión de Cultura y Medios de Comunicación del Parlamento británico, ante la que comparecieron padre e hijo el año pasado, y que se espera que cuestione el testimonio del heredero, que negó ante los diputados tener conocimiento del alcance de las escuchas en uno de sus periódicos, el ya clausurado News of the world.
