El jugador de los Washington Wizards de la NBA Gilbert Arenas se declaró el viernes culpable de un delito grave de posesión de armas y se enfrenta a hasta seis meses de cárcel como parte de un acuerdo tras llevar cuatro armas al vestuario de su equipo.
Arenas, de 28 años y quien firmó en el verano de 2008 un contrato de seis años por 111 millones de dólares (77,2 millones de euros), fue suspendido de forma indefinida el mes pasado por la NBA tras el incidente ocurrido en el Verizon Center.
Arenas, quien ha dicho que las armas estaban descargadas, presentó su alegato como culpable de un único cargo por delitos graves en una audiencia que duró menos de 30 minutos ante la Corte Suprema del distrito de Columbia.
La acusación considera que llevar un arma sin licencia es una violación de la ley en Washington D.C. y conlleva una pena máxima de cinco años de prisión. El juez Robert Morin dijo a Arenas que no estaba necesariamente obligado a cumplir el acuerdo.
Se fijó el 26 de marzo como posible fecha para la emisión de sentencia, a la espera de un sumario que podría llevar hasta ocho semanas. No obstante el abogado de Arenas, Kenneth Wainstein, presionó para que se fije otra fecha.
Wainstein y Arenas, ligeramente cabizbajo, dejaron el juzgado sin emitir comentarios. En un comunicado, Wainstein señaló que su cliente "aceptaba toda la responsabilidad por sus acciones, reconocía que todas eran erróneas y contra la ley y se ha disculpado con todos los que se vieron afectados".
El fiscal Chris Kavanaugh comentó ante la prensa, "estamos satisfechos ante la disposición".
