El cantante español Julio Iglesias destacó hoy en Puerto Príncipe que Haití necesita "ayuda continua" para salir del "drama profundo" que vive tras el devastador terremoto del 12 de enero.
"Nunca que visto en mi vida un país más destruido", dijo el intérprete durante una visita de varias horas a la capital haitiana, donde se entrevistó con el presidente René Préval.
Iglesias, quien reside buena parte del año en el balneario dominicano de Punta Cana, consideró "muy importante conocer y ver lo que pasa en Haití" en persona.
Por ello se desplazó a la nación antillana, desde donde llamó a entender "el drama profundo" que atraviesa el país, que, dijo, "necesita tiempo" y asistencia a largo plazo para superar esta tragedia.
El sismo de 7 grados en la escala de Richter que asoló Haití el pasado 12 de enero causó unos 170.000 muertos, unos 200.000 heridos y unos tres millones de damnificados, la tercera parte de la población del país más pobre de América.
El intérprete de "La vida sigue igual" es uno de los primeros artistas que ha visitado el país caribeño tras el movimiento telúrico para manifestar su solidaridad con las víctimas.
También han estado en Haití figuras políticas, que van desde el presidente dominicano, Leonel Fernández, hasta el secretario general de la Organización de Estados Americanos, José Miguel Insulza.
