El debate sobre el destino de la central nuclear de Santa María de Garoña ha entrado en una nueva fase, en la que los partidarios de uno y otro bando presumen del apoyo de personalidades como el cantante Kiko Veneno o el presidente cántabro, Miguel Ángel Revilla. El artista, como el secretario federal de Medio Ambiente del PSOE, Hugo Morán, es uno de los 200 firmantes de un manifiesto que pide la clausura inmediata de la planta atómica burgalesa porque "no hay ningún obstáculo económico que impida cerrarla, salvo los intereses de las compañías eléctricas propietarias, Iberdrola y Endesa".
Según la declaración, apoyada por unas 40 personas del mundo de la cultura, como Amparanoia y los miembros de M-Clan, las empresas dueñas de la planta "quieren seguir lucrándose con esta vieja central aunque sea a costa de exponer a la población y al medio ambiente al riesgo de sufrir un accidente nuclear". El manifiesto, promovido por Greenpeace y Ecologistas en Acción, exige "acabar con la radiactividad que Garoña emite regularmente [...] y que es nociva para la salud y el medio ambiente", aunque ningún organismo científico ha avalado esta acusación.
El comité de empresa de la central, por su parte, informó esta mañana de que acudirá al Parlamento Europeo a reivindicar la renovación de Garoña hasta 2019 y de que el presidente cántabro ha escrito a Zapatero para que "reflexione sobre la prórroga".
