El tenista Andy Roddick, número seis del escalafón mundial, no necesitará cirugía para la lesión de rodilla que lo obligó a retirarse del Masters de Shanghái esta semana, y se espera que pueda volver a jugar en tres semanas.
El estadounidense, que aún necesita puntos para asegurarse un puesto en el Torneo de Maestros de Londres de final de temporada, se retiró el martes de su partido ante el suizo Stanislas Wawrinka, en uno de los siete abandonos que ha sufrido el torneo hasta ahora.
"Los resultados de la resonancia magnética mostraron un esguince leve de su ligamento colateral medial de la rodilla izquierda", indicó un comunicado publicado en su página web (www.andyroddick.com).
"La noticia es muy buena para Andy. No necesitará cirugía y se espera que Andy se recupere al 100 por cien. Va a descansar y recibir tratamiento, y se espera que vuelva a la actividad en dos o tres semanas", agregó el texto.
De ser así, Roddick volvería a las pistas en el Masters de París, que se disputará entre el 8 y el 15 de noviembre.
En la capital francesa, el estadounidense tendrá que asegurar su lugar en el torneo Londres, que reúne a los mejores tenistas de la temporada, y que comenzará el 22 del próximo mes.
Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray y el argentino Juan Martín del Potro - ya se han clasificado, dejando tres plazas libres.
A pesar de perder su primer partido en Pekín la semana pasada y de su retirada en Shangái, Roddick sigue sexto en la lista de puntos de 2009, y tiene una cómoda ventaja sobre el grupo de perseguidores.
