El primer ministro iraquí, Nuri Al Maliki, de visita en Irán, ha instado a la ONU a levantar las sanciones impuestas a Irak desde principios de la década pasada para facilitar la reconstrucción del país, informó hoy la televisión iraní Al Alam.
"En Irak ya no hay nada que amenace a los países vecinos ni a la paz mundial (..) ya no se puede justificar la continuidad de las sanciones o del trato de Irak según el Séptimo Capítulo (de la Carta fundacional de la ONU)", dijo Maliki en una reunión que mantuvo anoche con representantes de la colonia iraquí en Irán.
El primer ministro iraquí se refería sobre todo a las sanciones internacionales, especialmente las económicas, vigentes contra Irak desde 1990, cuando el ejército del régimen de Sadam Husein -derrocado en 2003- invadió el vecino Kuwait.
"Irak cuenta ahora con un gobierno democráticamente elegido y nada puede justificar la continuidad de esas sanciones", recalcó.
"Nosotros y el mundo actuamos por la reconstrucción, pero queremos que quiten los esposos que restringen nuestro movimiento, y levanten esas sanciones para que los iraquíes puedan actuar en favor de su país en los campos político, económico y de seguridad", añadió.
Maliki tiene previsto reunirse hoy con el líder supremo de Irán, el ayatolá Ali Jamenei, antes de concluir su visita oficial de tres días en Teherán, donde fue recibido por varias altas autoridades, encabezadas por el presidente del país, Mahmud Ahmadineyad.
