El español Marcel Granollers, se recuperó de los dos primeros sets perdidos, para ganar los tres siguientes al sueco Robin Soderling, octavo favorito, y liquidar el partido por 5-7, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 y 6-2 en la primera ronda del Abierto de Australia.
Granollers proporcionó la derrota más importante de este torneo por el momento. Soderling, finalista de Roland Garros el pasado año, y que había tenido problemas en el codo durante el torneo de exhibición de Kooyong la pasada semana, dominaba el partido con tranquilidad hasta que el barcelonés encontró su juego.
Marcel acabó el partido como pudo. Con 4-1 en el último parcial tuvo que llamar dos veces al fisioterapeuta, debido a unos problemas en el cuádriceps derecho. Pero a las tres horas y 21 minutos pudo levantar los brazos en signo de victoria.
Ahora se enfrentará con el ganador del encuentro entre el colombiano Alejandro Falla y el brasileño Marcos Daniel.
