Si Al Ándalus ha puesto a Córdoba en el contexto internacional, Medina Azahara es uno de los principales exponentes de esta cultura. A unos 5 kilómetros de la ciudad se levanta esta ciudad de ensueño y lujo mandada construir en el siglo X a los pies de Sierra Morena por el califa cordobés Abd al-Rahman III, en aquel tiempo el rey más poderoso de Occidente. Un conjunto con quince mil puertas y cuatro mil trescientas trece columnas que se derrumbó en el siglo XI, cuando la ciudad fue saqueada por los mercenarios bereberes.
El monumental pórtico de arcos, que separaba la explanada donde se celebraban desfiles del área pública del alcázar, y la casa de los Visires, son dos de los restos más sobresalientes y mejor conservados del conjunto de la antigua ciudad palatina.
A partir del próximo otoño contará con un centro de interpretación que permitirá que el visitante pueda conocer en profundidad uno de los conjuntos arqueológicos más importantes de Europa. La Junta de Andalucía, que ha invertido en este proyecto más de 20 millones de euros, está trabajando en el programa de actividades que complementarán la apertura y que tendrán una importante orientación hacia la participación del visitante.
Entre otras instalaciones, el centro contará con un auditorio, una sala de proyecciones, una biblioteca especializada, una tienda, un restaurante y un aparcamiento. Asimismo, este recinto estará abierto al desarrollo de programas educativos, en los que se incidirá en el valor histórico y cultural del yacimiento, así como talleres de recuperación, en los que los visitantes podrán comprender mejor el proceso de restauración y rehabilitación del yacimiento.
