El Parlamento de Kuwait aprobó en 2005 el derecho de voto de las mujeres. Un año después, Rola Dashti fue la primera en presentar su candidatura en las elecciones legislativas. Las perdió, aunque no dejó de defender los derechos civiles de las mujeres. Tres años después, volvió a presentarse y es ahora una de las cuatro primeras kuwaitíes elegidas que entrarán en el Parlamento de ese emirato del Golfo Pérsico.
¿Qué significa su victoria en las legislativas del 16 de mayo?
Es una victoria para toda la sociedad kuwaití, para la democracia y para nuestro futuro.
Los más conservadores piensan que la sociedad no está lista para la participación de las mujeres en la escena política.
¡No es verdad! La gente de mi país aspira al cambio. Las mujeres tienen el derecho de voto desde 2005 y en poco tiempo hemos sido elegidas; demuestra que la sociedad quiere que la mujer participe en el proceso de decisión político.
¿Qué piensa hacer ahora?
La prioridad son las reformas económicas en esta época de crisis, el desarrollo de la educación y, por supuesto, defender los derechos de la mujer. Lucharé para abrir más puertas a las jóvenes.
¿Es el Islam un obstáculo?
Kuwait es una sociedad conservadora, pero también es abierta. Somos musulmanes, aunque nada impide que la mujer participe en el proceso de decisión. Los kuwaitíes lo acaban de demostrar.
¿Es Kuwait un modelo a seguiren el resto de la región?
Nuestra victoria es un ejemplo no sólo para la región, sino también para el mundo entero.
