La ciclista bielorrusa Zinaida Stahurskaia, campeona mundial de fondo en carretera en 2000 y vencedora del Tour de Francia en 2002, murió al ser atropellada por un coche, informó hoy el ministerio del Interior de Bielorrusia.
"Stahúrskaia fue atropellada por un jeep Honda cuando circulaba en bicicleta a la altura del kilómetro 94 de la carretera que une Vitebsk con Gomel", señaló la fuente a la agencia rusa Interfax.
El automóvil, conducido por una ciudadana rusa, atropelló a la ciclista, pese a que ésta circulaba por el carril contrario.
El entrenador de Stahúrskaia, Vladímir Pecherin, que seguía a la ciclista al volante de su coche, tuvo que dar un giro brusco para no colisionar con el jeep.
Stahúrskaia, que reside habitualmente en Italia, había regresado a Bielorrusia hacía una semana para huir del calor del sur de Europa y entrenarse de cara a futuras competiciones.
La bielorrusa, que logró varias victorias de etapa en el Tour de Francia y el Giro de Italia, había sido suspendida en 2006 por dos años por su propia federación tras dar positivo en los controles antidopaje.
