Al menos tres civiles han muerto víctimas del "fuego cruzado" entre un grupo talibán y tropas extranjeras y afganas en el este del país, informó hoy la OTAN en un comunicado.
La Fuerza Internacional de Asistencia a la Seguridad (ISAF), misión bajo mando de la OTAN, explicó que los insurgentes lanzaron ayer un ataque contra las tropas conjuntas sin que mediara "provocación" en un puesto militar del distrito de Pech, situado en la provincia oriental de Kunar.
Varios civiles quedaron "atrapados" en el intercambio de fuego que se desencadenó y tres perdieron la vida, mientras que un "número indeterminado de personas" sufrió heridas, según la ISAF.
"Las fuerzas insurgentes en el distrito de Pech continúan llevando a cabo ataques en áreas que ponen en peligro a hombres, mujeres y niños inocentes", denunció en el comunicado el coronel John Spiszer.
"Es un comportamiento lamentable y cobarde. El reciente incremento de la violencia cerca de civiles en Pech ilustra el desprecio que sienten los insurgentes por la vida de los afganos", añadió.
Los heridos han sido trasladados a bases militares de las tropas extranjeras para recibir tratamiento médico.
Ningún soldado afgano ni de la OTAN ha resultado herido en el ataque.
Según datos de la ONU, 2.118 civiles perdieron la vida en 2008, el año más sangriento desde que los talibanes fueron desalojados del poder en 2001.
Un 55 por ciento de ellos (1.160 personas) murieron en acciones atribuidas a los talibanes, mientras que el Ejército afgano y las tropas internacionales fueron responsables de la muerte de 828 personas (un 39 por ciento), según la ONU.
