El Defensor del Pueblo, Enrique Múgica, ha pedido a las Administraciones que mejoren las condiciones de los hospitales psiquiátricos penitenciarios. También solicita que se refuercen los servicios que prestan a los internos aquejados de enfermedades mentales más graves. Estas peticiones han surgido a raíz de las visitas realizadas a principios de marzo a los dos centros de este tipo que existen en España, situados en Alicante y Sevilla, que dependen de Instituciones Penitenciarias.
Fuentes de la oficina del Defensor del Pueblo señalaron ayer que la renovación de las infraestructuras en los centros penitenciarios ordinarios no ha supuesto una mejora en los hospitales psiquiátricos de las prisiones. "Estos centros son los grandes olvidados, están como podían estar hacer 20 años", detalló uno de los responsables del informe. Así, asegura que los más de 400 internos del psiquiátrico de Alicante y los cerca de 200 internados en el centro de Sevilla (en su mayoría esquizofrénicos) están atendidos "con esfuerzo y dedicación" por personal de la Administración y de ONG que "no basta para atender sus necesidades". Y reconoce que las condiciones de vida de estos reclusos "no son equiparables a las del resto de los presidiarios del sistema penitenciario español".
Además de reforzar las plantillas, Múgica destaca la necesidad de disponer de más recursos terapéutico-asistenciales para reinsertar a los presos cuando obtienen la libertad.
