El español Rafael Nadal, número uno mundial y campeón de las últimas cuatro ediciones del Godó, inició su cuarta defensa consecutiva del título con una plácida victoria (6-2 y 6-2) ante el portugués Frederico Gil, del que se deshizo en una hora y media de juego.
Dos rupturas en cada set le bastaron a Nadal para pasar, sin sobresaltos, a octavos de final, aunque el mallorquín no desplegó, ni mucho menos, un juego brillante
No obstante, esto algo habitual en las primeras rondas de los torneos que disputa, pues siempre acostumbra a mejorar sus prestaciones a medida que avanza la semana.
Gil, el mejor tenista de la historia de portugal por ránking (es el número 75) ya se había enfrentado al balear este año en Miami, donde también cayó por 7-5 y 6-3. Hoy, tampoco pudo hacer mucho más.
Si ayer se le veía 'picando' la bola de derechas como un poseso durante un entrenamiento en una de las pista anexas, e incluso ensayar, puño en alto, la manera de celebrar los puntos, el portugués pareció empequeñecer cuando saltó esta tarde a la pista central del RCT Barcelona.
Una hora tardo Gil en meterse en el partido: cuando ya había perdido por 6-2 la primera manga y desperdiciado tres bolas de 'break' con 0-1 en contra en el segundo set.
Aunque el resultado de este segundo parcial sería idéntico al primero, el luso exhibió un mayor potencial a partir del 1-1, y obligó a Nadal a emplearse a fondo en casi todos los puntos y a no cometer más errores no forzados, algo que sí que se había permitido en la primera manga.
Al final el numero uno mundial tuvo que aumentar la intensidad de su juego para romper una vez más el servicio de su adversario y acabar dominando con el suyo el último juego del partido, que le permitió cerrar el mismo con un doble 6-2.
El 'rey de la tierra' se enfrentará mañana al vencedor del duelo que librarán, a última hora de esta tarde, el belga Cristophe Rochus y el francés Richard Gasquet, decimotercer cabeza de serie del torneo.
