El primer ministro israelí, Benjamín Netanyahu, dijo hoy que los soldados israelíes que atacaron una flota de embarcaciones con activistas que se dirigían a Gaza en aguas internacionales "actuaron para proteger sus vidas".
Nehanyahu realizó unas breves declaraciones tras reunirse hoy en Ottawa con el primer ministro canadiense, Stephen Harper.
Según la televisión pública canadiense, CBC, Netanyahu justificó el ataque israelí en aguas internacionales contra la llamada "Flotilla de la Libertad" que transportaba ayuda humanitaria a Gaza, y dijo que sus soldados fueron "atacados de forma deliberada".
"Fueron atacados, golpeados y apuñalados. Los soldados actuaron para proteger sus vidas y de forma lamentable en este intercambio algunas personas murieron".
El primer ministro israelí también expresó su pesar por la cancelación del resto de su visita en Canadá, donde tenía previsto permanecer hasta mañana, y de la reunión prevista para mañana en Washington con el presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama.
Netanyahu también señaló que Gaza es una "base para los terroristas de Hamás" y que las autoridades israelíes habían ofrecido a los organizadores de la flota de ayuda humanitaria entregar a los palestinos los materiales que Israel considerase apropiados pero que estos se habían negado.
Estos son los primeros comentarios públicos de Netanyahu desde el incidente.
El primer ministro israelí tenía previsto celebrar una rueda de prensa tras su reunión con Harper, pero el encuentro con los medios de comunicación fue cancelado.
Netanyahu tiene previsto regresar de forma inmediata a Israel.
