Antonis Nikopolidis, portero de la selección de Grecia, próxima rival de España en la Eurocopa de fútbol de Austria y Suiza, que hoy, domingo, anunció su retirada del equipo nacional de su país, explicó que "la decisión la tenía tomada hace tiempo".
Nikopolidis, de 37 años, guardameta del Olimpiacos, jugó los seis partidos de la Eurocopa de Portugal 2004, y fue uno de los héroes de la selección de Grecia que sorprendió al mundo entero al proclamarse campeona continental en el torneo luso, en el que derrotaron dos veces al anfitrión -la segunda de ellas, en la final (1-0)-.
Nikopolidis, que jugará ante España su partido número 90 como internacional, explicó, tras el entrenamiento que completó hoy, domingo, Grecia, en la localidad salzburguesa de Seekirchen, que está "muy orgulloso" y "muy feliz" por haber defendido durante todo este tiempo la portería de la selección de su país.
