El ex presidente del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) César Nombela ha señalado hoy que la concesión del Premio Príncipe de Asturias de Investigación a cinco científicos que trabajan en la creación de nuevos materiales "es una apuesta por la ciencia del futuro".
Nombela, que formó parte del jurado que otorgó el Premio al ingeniero estadounidense Robert Langer y a sus compatriotas químicos Tobin Marks y George M. Whitesides, así como a los japoneses Sumio Iijama (físico) y Shuji Nakamura (ingeniero), ha subrayado que "la fabricación de nuevos materiales manejando la materia en una escala atómica es una de las gran aportaciones científica con consecuencias técnicas muy inmediatas".
En este sentido el catedrático de Microbiología ha precisado que "algunas de las aplicaciones que se premian ya están en uso como las lámparas de bajo consumo o dispositivos de esterilización muy eficaces para potabilizar el agua".
Ha explicado que otras, en cambio, representan planteamientos más de futuro como los nanotubos de carbono, que permitirán desde almacenar hidrógeno o su utilización como soportes para el desarrollo de células y tejidos.
