El presidente Barack Obama ha decidido enviar nuevamente un embajador de Estados Unidos a Siria después de una ausencia de más de cuatro años, informó hoy el diario The Washington Post.
El diario, que identifica la fuente de su información como un funcionario de alta jerarquía que desea mantener su anonimato, sostuvo que anoche el secretario de Estado adjunto para el Oriente Medio, Jeffrey Feltman informó de la intención de Obama al embajador de Siria en Washington, Imad Mustafa.
"Con el retorno de un enviado de EEUU a Damasco, el Gobierno de Obama busca un papel más amplio para Estados Unidos en la región al tiempo que el presidente (Obama) trabaja para rehabilitar las relaciones con el mundo islámico y el Oriente Medio árabe", según el diario.
El anterior presidente norteamericano, George W. Bush, retiró al embajador de EEUU en Damasco en febrero de 2005 después del asesinato del ex primer ministro libanés Rafiq al Hariri.
Según el rotativo "se sospecha que agentes de los servicios de inteligencia sirios estuvieron vinculados con el ataque en Beirut que mató a Hariri. El presidente sirio Bashar al Assad ha rechazado ese acusación".
La supuesta decisión de Obama "sigue a una serie de visitas recientes a Siria por parte de delegaciones militares y diplomáticas estadounidenses de alto nivel, incluido un viaje allí este mes del enviado especial de Obama para el Oriente Medio, George Mitchell", señaló el diario.
