Los dos principales operadores turísticos del Reino Unido perdieron más de diez millones de libras (unos 11,3 millones de euros) diarios por el cierre del espacio aéreo a causa de la erupción del volcán islandés.
Según informa hoy la prensa británica, Tui Travel perdió entre cinco y seis millones de libras (entre 5,6 y 6,7 millones de euros) por día, mientras que Thomas Cook Group perdió siete millones de libras (unos 7,9 millones de euros) diarios.
Las dos compañías se han quejado de que el Gobierno británico no ha presionado lo suficiente a las aerolíneas de billetes baratos para que se hicieran cargo de los costes de repatriación de los británicos que estaban en el extranjero.
Según estos operadores, "ha quedado claro que el Gobierno acepta un sistema dual por la forma en que se permite operar a las aerolíneas de bajo coste frente a las compañías aéreas de operadores turísticos, que asumen toda la responsabilidad de los costes, bienestar y repatriación de sus clientes".
Se estima que el cierre de los aeropuertos por la nube de cenizas volcánica le ha costado a la industria de la aviación unos 130 millones de libras (unos 146 millones de euros) diarios.
