Las autoridades palestinas esperan que el enviado especial de EEUU para Oriente Medio, George Mitchell, que visitará esta semana la región, logre poner en marcha negociaciones de paz con Israel, dijo a Efe hoy el jefe negociador palestino, Saeb Erekat.
"Los palestinos vamos a cooperar totalmente con Mitchell para que tenga éxito en reiniciar las negociaciones", dijo Erekat, quien añadió que el proceso de paz "es la única forma de conseguir un Estado palestino", ya que "recurrir a la violencia es lo fácil, pero no queremos que vuelva".
El enviado estadounidense hará esta semana una visita de varios días a Israel y Cisjordania para tratar de impulsar el diálogo, pero por el momento no se ha confirmado la fecha exacta de su llegada, indicó a Efe la Embajada de EEUU en Tel Aviv.
Para Erekat, "es hora de tomar decisiones y de trabajar de verdad en una solución de dos Estados", pero para ello "es necesario tener un socio genuino".
Pese a mostrar su deseo a dialogar, los palestinos se niegan a regresar a la mesa de negociación hasta que Israel cese por completo la construcción en los asentamientos judíos en Cisjordania, y consideran insuficiente el cese a temporal y parcial de la edificación (que no incluye a las colonias de Jerusalén Oriental) impuesto por el primer ministro israelí, Benjamín Netanyahu.
"Netanyahu quiere negociar sólo por negociar, mientras que los palestinos creemos que las negociaciones deben ser una formula para alcanzar la paz", argumentó Erekat.
Según el negociador palestino, el jefe del gobierno israelí "debe darse cuenta del significado que Jerusalén tiene para los árabes, los palestinos y los musulmanes. Negociaciones sin hablar de Jerusalén son inútiles y la paz no puede alcanzarse sin Jerusalén Este como capital de Palestina".
El presidente palestino, Mahmud Abás, también declaró ayer que "no dejará de trabajar para la paz" y mostró su esperanza de que "el año 2010 sea el año de paz en el que se establezca el Estado independiente palestino con Jerusalén (oriental) como su capital", según informó la agencia palestina Wafa.
