Los cuartos comicios democráticos de Suráfrica desde el fin del apartheid transcurrieron ayer con normalidad y con participación récord, que hizo que algunos centros se quedaran sin papeletas.
La Comisión Electoral Independiente (CEI) estima que la participación puede rondar el 87% de los 23 millones de votantes censados, la cifra más alta desde la primera votación democrática, en 1994. La CEI decretó que las urnas siguieran abiertas más allá de la hora de cierre en los colegios donde había colas o faltaba material.
El Congreso Nacional Africano (CNA), tiene la victoria asegurada, pero podría perder la mayoría de dos tercios en el Parlamento a manos de una oposición más fuerte y diversa, que incluye una escisión del propio CNA. La pobreza y la economía han tenido más importancia en la campaña que los temas raciales. "Es una nueva era. La gente habla de temas nuevos y hay una nueva generación no ligada a la lucha antiapartheid", dijo el analista político David Monyae.
