En pleno baño de multitudes y desde el centro de la tarima dispuesta en el Memorial Coliseum de Los Ángeles, el español Pau Gasol, flamante campeón de la NBA con los Lakers, prometió a la afición de su equipo "más títulos" en el futuro.
"¡Esto no se ha acabado!", exclamó el ala-pívot de la franquicia angelina. "Tenemos un grupo muy joven y mucha hambre, ¡queremos más, mucho más, así que estad preparados!, agregó el jugador, el primer español en lograr el anillo de la NBA.
"Quiero dar las gracias a todos por estar hoy aquí, sois los que hacéis que esto sea tan especial, somos muy afortunados por estar aquí", dijo un Gasol que dio las gracias al público por el cálido recibimiento que le dispensó desde el primer momento, cuando en febrero de 2008 llegó a Los Ángeles procedente de Memphis.
"Todo el mundo me dio mucho cariño y me sentí bendecido por formar parte de esta ciudad, de este equipo y de esta organización", afirmó Gasol. "Gracias de corazón a todos, sois los mejores aficionados del mundo", añadió.
Preguntado por la dificultad de jugar a lo largo de la temporada en posiciones diferentes y de asumir un rol secundario en un equipo con una superestrella, Kobe Bryant, apuntó: "Fue un reto, obviamente".
"El equipo técnico me dio una gran responsabilidad; todos confiaban en mí, pero con estos jugadores todo es posible, tenemos un grupo de gran calidad y simplemente se trató de hacer mi parte", concluyó el español, testigo hoy de cómo unas 150.000 personas inundaron las calles de Los Ángeles para celebrar el título de la NBA de los Lakers.
En el Memorial Coliseum se agolparon otros 80.000 aficionados.
