Paula Radcliffe, plusmarquista mundial de maratón, no participará en los Mundiales de Berlín'09, según confirmaron esta mañana oficiales de la delegación británica.
Radcliffe, en su primera carrera en nueve meses tras una importante lesión en el pie derecho, se probó el domingo en el medio maratón de Nueva York, prueba que ganó con un tiempo de 1h09:45, pero según indicaron dichas fuentes no se encuentra en plenas condiciones como para afrontar un maratón de unos Mundiales.
Campeona del mundo en Helsinki'05, declaró a través de un comunicado que se encontraba muy triste por "no estar recuperada y en condiciones y a tiempo de representar a Gran Bretaña en Berlín, especialmente después de haberlo tenido cerca".
La atleta, de 35 años, apunta que tras superar la operación del pie de manera exitosa podrá trabajar al ciento por ciento para encontrarse bien y lograr un éxito en los Juegos de Londres'12.
"Correr en Nueva York era una parte necesaria del proceso de aproximación a mi puesta en forma, pero después de hablar con mi entrenador y el equipo médico está claro que no estoy lo bastante preparada", apuntó Radcliffe.
Charles van Commenee, responsable del equipo británico, destacó que "perder una atleta del calibre de Paula es una lástima. Si hubiera estado en forma podría claramente haber estado en disposición de luchar por el título, pero ella ha tomado una difícil decisión y hay que respetarla".
