Una buena noticia para loshombres que cultivan el suelo en Estados Unidos: la exposiciónregular a los pesticidas de uso frecuente en las granjas noelevaría el riesgo de infarto.
En la investigación llamada Agricultural Health Study,realizada entre 1993 y el 1997, los autores les preguntaron amás de 54.000 agricultores qué pesticidas usaban habitualmente,cuánto tiempo pasaban en los tractores y otros equipos, y sicriaban aves o ganado.
El equipo de Jane A. Hoppin, del Instituto Nacional deCiencias de la Salud Ambiental, en Carolina del Norte,entrevistó a 32.000 de esos hombres cinco años después yregistró 839 infartos no fatales.
Durante el seguimiento, que duró unos 12 años, 476agricultores murieron por infarto.
Tras controlar factores que elevarían el riesgo de infarto,como la edad, el tabaquismo y el sobrepeso, el equipo hallóindicios de un aumento del riesgo de infarto con seispesticidas, aunque la relación no fue estadísticamentesignificativa.
Esos pesticidas fueron los organoclorados aldrin y DDT, elherbicida 2,4,5-T, el fumigante etileno dibromida y losfungicidas maneb y ziram.
En cambio, otros cinco pesticidas (carbaril, terbufo,imazetapir, pendimetalina y aceite de petróleo) estuvieronasociados con una reducción del riesgo de muerte por infarto.
Pero ninguno de los 49 pesticidas estuvo estadísticamenteasociado con el infarto y los investigadores no observaron unriesgo similar por otras "exposiciones" agrícolas.
En American Journal of Epidemiology, el equipo escribió quelos agricultores tienen tasas de infarto más bajas que lapoblación general.
Los autores consideran que se necesitan más estudios paraconfirmar los resultados y evaluar los riesgos cardíacos en elcorto y el largo plazo asociados con la exposición apesticidas.
