La tabaquera Philip Morris International, que vende sus productos fuera de Estados Unidos, ha anunciado hoy que ganó 2.161 millones de dólares en el primer trimestre del año, el 12,6 % más que en el mismo periodo de 2011.
La compañía subió el pasado cinco de abril 25 céntimos el precio de sus principales marcas de cigarrillos (Marlboro, Chesterield y L&M). Fue la primera tabaquera que reaccionó a la modificación del impuesto sobre labores del tabaco aprobada recientemente por el Gobierno.
La empresa, segregada de Altria en 2008, ha informado de que la ganancia neta por acción en ese periodo alcanzó 1,25 dólares, frente a los 1,06 dólares del primer trimestre del año precedente.
Los ingresos de Philip Morris International, que vende los cigarrillos Marlboro fuera de Estados Unidos, mientras que Altria mantiene su comercialización dentro del país a través de Philip Morris USA, se incrementaron el 9 %, hasta los 18.022 millones de dólares entre enero y marzo de 2012.
"Empezamos el año con mucho empuje, con la mejor actuación trimestral en volumen orgánico desde marzo de 2008", indicó hoy el consejero delegado de la firma, Louis Camilleri, en un comunicado de prensa.
La empresa, que mantiene su contabilidad en dólares y sus operaciones se coordinan desde Nueva York, detalló que en el trimestre en Asia su facturación aumentó el 19,5 %, hasta 2.777 millones de dólares, mientras que en América Latina y Canadá creció el 0,4 %, para alcanzar 783 millones de dólares.
En la Unión Europea (UE) su facturación subió el 2,6 %, hasta 2.053 millones de dólares, mientras que en la región compuesta por Europa Oriental, Oriente Medio y África el incremento fue del 8,8 %, para situarse en 1.835 millones.
