Pintar de blanco los tejados de todas las ciudades del mundo podría enfriar significativamente las temperaturas de las áreas urbanas y ayudar a aliviar el impacto del calentamiento global, según un estudio.
Aunque algunos críticos la consideran extravagante, la idea la respaldó el año pasado el secretario de Energía de Estados Unidos, Stephen Chu, Premio Nobel en Física.
Mientras, los estudios de científicos del Centro Nacional para la Investigación Climática de Estados Unidos indicaron que la propuesta tenía sus posibilidades.
"Nuestro estudio demuestra que los tejados blancos, al menos en teoría, pueden ser un método efectivo para reducir el calentamiento urbano", dijo Keith Oleson, el jefe del estudio, en un comunicado.
"Aún resta por ver si es posible hoy día que las ciudades pinten sus tejados de blanco, pero la idea ciertamente exige una mayor investigación", agregó.
El cambio climático golpea más a las ciudades que a las zonas rurales porque las urbes, con su asfalto oscuro y sus tejados absorben el calor del sol.
Esto crea las llamadas "islas de calor", donde la temperatura es entre 1 y 3 grados centígrados mayor que en las áreas rurales.
Los tejados blancos y los caminos con colores claros reflejarían la luz en vez de absorberla.
Los investigadores utilizaron un modelo por ordenador para simular cuánta radiación solar absorben las superficies urbanas, y determinaron que, si todos los tejados de las ciudades se pintaran de blanco, el efecto de las "islas de calor" se podría reducir en un 33 por ciento.
Ello podría reducir la temperatura media de las ciudades en 0,7 grados Farenheit.
