Unos piratas atacaron el jueves dos barcos cargueros frente a la costa de Kenia y al oeste de las Seychelles y abordaron uno de ellos, dijo la fuerza naval de la Unión Europea.
"A primera hora del 22 de octubre de 2009, a 400 millas náuticas al este de Mombasa, Kenia, unos piratas intentaron secuestrar al MV Jolly Rosso", dijo en un comunicado Navfor de la fuerza de la UE contra piratería en la región.
"Casi a la misma hora, el MV Al Jaliq, un carguero de bandera panameña, declaró estar siendo atacado a 180 millas náuticas al oeste de las Seychelles", agregó.
El MV Jolly Rosso, un carguero de bandera italiana, logró evadir el ataque, pero los piratas abordaron el barco MV Al Jaliq, dijo el comunicado.
Navfor dijo que desde la patrulla área marítima de la UE habían "confirmado el secuestro de MV Al Jaliq, seis piratas a bordo y dos esquifes de ataque remolcados.
No hubo detalles inmediatamente disponibles del carguero ni de las nacionalidades o número de tripulantes a bordo de los barcos.
Las bandas de piratas somalíes han causado caos en los trayectos estratégicos que vinculan Europa con Asia, a pesar de que naves extranjeras patrullan el área, y han conseguido millones de dólares en pagos de rescate.
La semana pasada, piratas somalíes capturaron un buque de carga con una tripulación de 25 chinos en el océano Indico.
