El actual presidente afgano, Hamid Karzai, aseguró hoy a Efe que las tropas españolas están haciendo un buen trabajo en Afganistán, donde hoy se han celebrado elecciones presidenciales.
"Las tropas españolas van muy bien", declaró a Efe Karzai al término de una breve rueda de prensa en el palacio presidencial de Kabul, con motivo de los comicios.
Anteriormente, el presidente afgano se había felicitado por la marcha de las elecciones, celebradas con el temor de que los talibanes pudieran cometer masivos atentados y ataques para cumplir su amenaza de boicotear el proceso.
Aunque durante la jornada, perdió la vida al menos medio centenar de personas -entre insurgentes, civiles y fuerzas de seguridad-, tanto el presidente como fuentes de la misión de la ONU en Afganistán dijeron que la violencia fue menor de la esperada.
Unos 17 millones de personas estaban convocadas a las urnas, en un proceso que el presidente afgano calificó como un paso adelante y una prueba del afán de superación de sus conciudadanos.
Karzai parte como favorito en el proceso, aunque necesitará sumar más del 50 por ciento de los votos para evitar tener que acudir a la segunda vuelta.
El destacamento español en Afganistán está desplegado en las provincias de Herat y Badghis, en el noroeste afgano.
